FAQs

How long do treated wood piles last?

Treated wood piles can last 40 to 80 years, depending on the treatment type, soil or water conditions, and installation practices. Bell’s CCA-treated and laminated piling options are engineered for long-term durability in both marine and foundation applications.

What are wood piles used for?

Wood piles are widely used for docks, piers, bulkheads, seawalls, bridges and foundation projects. They provide strong, cost-effective structural support and are often chosen over steel or concrete for their sustainability and proven reliability.

What species of wood are used for Bell piles?

Bell supplies piles in multiple southern yellow pine species and other select wood types, depending on availability and project requirements. Species are chosen for strength, durability, and treatment compatibility, ensuring reliable performance in marine and foundation environments.

How do wood piles compare to steel piles?

Wood piles offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to steel. They are easier to handle, install, and source regionally, while still meeting engineering specifications. Bell’s treated wood piles are designed to resist decay and marine exposure, delivering reliable performance without the higher cost and environmental footprint of steel.

What lengths do your round wood posts and poles come in?

Posts are available in 6′, 7′, 8′, 10′, and 12′ lengths; poles are available in 20′ and 25′ lengths.

What diameters and bundle counts are offered?

Depending on length, options range from 2–3 in up to 7–8 in, with typical bundle counts like 160, 115, 80, 60, 50, 35, 30, 25, and 20 per bundle (varies by length and diameter).

What wood species and preservative treatment do you use?

All round posts and poles on this page are Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) and are pressure treated with CCA preservative for extended life. In some markets we offer Southern Yellow Pine, Red Pine, Lodgepole Pine, and Douglas Fir.

How are the ends finished—sharpened or blunt?

In SPF, 6′ and 7′ fence posts are pencil-point sharpened at the bottom and domed at the top for easier pounding. 8′, 10′, and 12′ fence posts are square-sharpened at the bottom, with blunt ends available by custom order. All 20′ and 25’ poles are blunt-ended.

What’s the natural taper of these posts and poles?

Starting at the top, the diameter increases about 1 inch for every 8 feet of length.  Although this is a special-order option, we do have the ability to supply doweled posts that are cylindrical.

Do you offer delivery and stock?

Yes. Bell maintains on-site inventory with high-volume production capacity and delivers by truck for timely on-site delivery.

What about sustainability and your guarantee?

Products are made from sustainable North American wood fiber resources, and your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed—backed by 115 years of Bell family integrity.
