How Bell is Helping Landowners See More Value from Their Timberland
For over 50 years, Bell’s Woodlands Management Assistance Program (MAPS) has supported landowners like Tom and his family in maintaining the health, productivity and profitability of their woodlands.
Tom’s 400-acre of timberland is located in the heart of Wisconsin, near the Wisconsin Dells. Originally purchased by his father in 1974, Tom and his siblings have trusted Bell to manage the property for the past 20 years.
Today, Tom lives 150 miles away in Illinois, but he and his family are still actively involved in their property thanks to their relationship with Bell.
Long-term planning
"With ten adult siblings, we have a big and growing family," Tom says. “Bell partners with us to create a custom plan that will help ensure our woodlands remain a healthy legacy for future generations.”
Bell also plays a proactive role in addressing any potential threats to the forest. For example, if a fungus becomes active in the area, Bell quickly notifies Tom and recommends a treatment plan, along with a local contractor to carry out the work.
"That kind of support is invaluable, especially when you don’t live nearby," adds Tom.
Selective harvesting
“We work with Bell to practice selective harvesting,” Tom explains, “which helps maintain a healthy forest while generating income.”
Harvesting occurs every 5 to 10 years, and Bell takes care of all the details, from obtaining cutting notices and communicating with Department of Natural Resources (DNR), to lining up cutting contractors and finding markets for the wood.
After each harvest, Tom’s family receives a check that helps cover ongoing expenses such as property taxes and liability insurance.
Specialized DNR expertise
Bell also manages complex DNR paperwork for Tom, making sure his property stays in good standing with state and federal regulations.
“That’s one of the best parts of working with Bell,” he says. “They take care of creating and updating our Managed Forest Plan in accordance with the Wisconsin DNR’s Managed Forest Law. This plan not only helps protect the health of our land but also lowers our state property taxes.”
Building community
Each year, Bell fosters a sense of community by hosting an annual meeting for local woodland owners.
“These meetings are a great way to stay informed on the latest state regulations and best practices,” Tom says. “They also help strengthen the connections between landowners, so we’re all working together to manage our woodlands responsibly.”
A trusted partner
Bell’s Woodlands Management Assistance Program has been a vital resource for Tom and his family for over two decades.
“We have a great relationship,” says Tom. “I know I can trust their expertise because it’s backed by over a century of experience in forestry management.”
